What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded service that provides the day-to-day support you need to live independently. You can choose to live on your own, or with other NDIS participants.

Your SIL funding helps with things like:
  • Personal care and daily living tasks
  • Cooking, cleaning, and household management
  • Building confidence and independent living skills
  • Taking part in community and social activities

SIL is different from SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation).
SIL covers the support you receive in your home, while SDA covers the physical house, space, and any modifications required within it.
You don’t need SDA funding to access SIL with New Horizons.

Your questions, answered

What does SIL funding in my NDIS plan cover?

Supported Independent Living funding covers the supports you need to live independently, such as daily personal care, help with household tasks, and assistance to build life skills.

Can I choose who I live with?

Absolutely. We take the time to match you with compatible housemates who share
your interests and routines. You’ll always have a say in who you live with. You can
also choose to live alone if that suits you.

What if I don’t have SDA funding?

That’s OK. You can still access Supported Independent Living even if you don’t have SDA funding. We’ll work with you to find the right home and supports.

How are New Horizons staff trained?

Our staff are qualified professionals trained in person-centred, trauma-informed care, with ongoing development to ensure the highest quality of support.

What happens if things aren’t working out?

We’re here to help. If a home or housemate match isn’t quite right, we’ll work closely with you to listen to your concerts, explore other options and make changes as needed. Our goal is to make sure you always feel comfortable and supported.
