Daniela Allison, currently serving as the General Manager for Sydney and Central West at New Horizons, embarked on her professional journey with a deep commitment to community service. She began her career in 2000, enrolling at TAFE to improve her life and that of her children. Throughout her studies, which included completing her Year 10 equivalent, coursework in Introduction to Welfare, a Certificate IV in Community Services Work, and a Diploma in Community Welfare Work, Daniela dedicated her time to volunteer initiatives at local primary schools and family support services. This hands-on experience reinforced her passion for helping others and expanding her skills.
In 2015, Daniela embraced a new challenge as the Customer Service Manager for South West Sydney following a restructure at New Horizons. This role allowed her to oversee various programs and services, further honing her leadership capabilities. A subsequent restructure in 2019 led her to the position of Regional Lead for Inclusion Services in both South East and South West Sydney.
By May 2023, Daniela ascended to the role of General Manager – Lifestyle, a position that challenged her to broaden her understanding of the diverse services New Horizons offers. This experience has underscored the importance of prioritization and delegation in leadership. Throughout her career, Daniela has collaborated with exceptional leaders and passionate stakeholders, all united by a common mission to provide outstanding support to those in need.
Daniela’s leadership journey has been both surprising and rewarding. She reflects on her growth with gratitude, emphasizing the challenges that have shaped her into a capable leader. Among her proudest achievements is her completion of a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work in 2020. In a time when the world shut down, she remained determined to finish this essential training, equipping her to share her lived experiences in meaningful ways and support her fellow peer workers.
She firmly believes in the critical role of peer work within the mental health sector, as it fosters hope, resilience, and empowerment for consumers. By drawing from their own experiences, peer workers can dismantle power imbalances and enable individuals to take charge of their recovery journeys.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Daniela is proud to wear many hats, both as a consumer and carer. Her personal experiences inspire her commitment to ensuring that everyone is treated with the dignity and respect that we all deserve.
